When Is an Extraction Required?

There are several reasons that may require extraction of teeth. The most common are:

  • Malformed teeth
  • Severe decay
  • Severe gum disease
  • Prepare for a prosthetic (like dentures)
  • Preparing for orthodontics

What to Expect

We will thoroughly evaluate your oral health, so that we are certain an extraction is the best solution for you before proceeding. Local anaesthetic numbs the area, and we’ll make sure you can’t feel anything. Then, specialised instruments will be used to extract the tooth. When necessary, we will place sutures to speed the healing process at the site. You’ll be given aftercare advice to ensure that you have a speedy recovery.

Aftercare Instructions

You can take a pain reliever or apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek to help with any discomfort you may feel. We also recommend that in the first 24 hours after your procedure you

  • Avoid alcohol & tobacco
  • Eat soft foods
  • Don’t suck through a straw or spit
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Chew on the opposite side of your mouth

After a day, you can eat normally, as long as it is comfortable for you. Though you’ll brush and floss as usual, be careful around the extraction site. You can rinse with warm salt water two to three times a day to further cleanse the area.
