Dental Implants

Illustration of dental implantHave you ever looked in the mirror and wished that you had a replacement for your missing teeth? At Kinross Drive Dental, we recommend dental implants, which are the most advanced solution to a single tooth or multiple missing teeth. It involves a titanium implant placed in the jaw by an oral surgeon. Once the area has healed, our clinic can fit you with a crown, bridge or denture to complete the procedure, restoring your smile’s look and function.

What Is a Dental Implant?

The term dental implant refers to an artificial tooth root that acts as the base upon which a restoration is attached. It’s made from strong titanium that looks similar to a screw. The restoration placed on it is the part that acts as a tooth, filling a gap where your original tooth is missing for a natural look.

What to Expect

There are three separate steps to receiving dental implants. Below, you can read about what to expect during each after it’s been determined that a dental implant is right for you.

  • Step 1: Your specialist oral surgeon will place the implant in the jawbone. Over approximately three months, it integrates into the bone. A temporary crown can be given if appropriate. If you required teeth extraction before proceeding with the implant, that will be done first, then given time to heal before the implant is placed.
  • Step 2: After the implant has integrated into the jawbone, the next phase can begin. Impressions will be taken to custom-create your crown, bridge or denture.
  • Step 3: Your restoration or prosthetic will be ready for fitting. If you received a temporary crown, it will be removed when the permanent crown is ready. After it’s been attached to the dental implant, the procedure is complete.

Caring for Dental Implants

Your dental implants can be cared for much the same as your natural teeth. Though they cannot get cavities and aren’t subject to discolouration, the gum around the tooth can become diseased. Therefore, you must brush and floss the implant the same as you would any other tooth. Along with your usual home care, it’s essential to visit our practice for twice-yearly dental checkups.
